Räppääjä is the Finnish term for a rapper, a musician who performs rap music. A räppääjä creates and delivers rhymed, rhythmic lyrics over beats, using flow, wordplay, and timing to fit a tempo. Performances can be live on stage, in studios, or as online content; lyrics are often in Finnish, but bilingual or multilingual artists exist. Finnish rap originated in the late 1980s and 1990s as part of the global hip hop movement and grew to mainstream prominence in the 2000s. Notable Finnish räppääjät include Cheek, Pyhimys, and Paleface, who helped bring Finnish-language rap to wider audiences. The scene emphasizes linguistic creativity, with alliteration and wordplay, and includes both mainstream acts and a strong underground and battle culture.
