Langeled

Langeled is a major natural gas pipeline system that transports gas from Norway to the United Kingdom. It links the Nyhamna gas processing facility on Norway’s west coast with the Easington gas terminal on the east coast of England, crossing the North Sea. The pipeline carries gas from the Ormen Lange field and other Norwegian sources, forming a key import route for UK gas supply.

The project comprises subsea pipelines and onshore facilities, designed to operate at high pressure with compressor stations along its route to maintain flow. Construction and commissioning took place in the early 2000s, and gas began flowing in the mid- to late-2000s. The system is operated by the Norwegian transport company Gassco on behalf of the Norwegian state, with the gas delivered to UK customers via the National Transmission System.

Langeled has been described as one of the world’s longest submarine gas pipelines at the time of its completion and remains a core component of Norway–UK gas trade. Its capacity supports a substantial portion of the UK’s natural gas requirements, and the line has undergone expansions to accommodate market changes and increased demand. The pipeline’s operation influences both energy security considerations and wholesale gas market dynamics in both countries.
