Ormen

Ormen is a Norwegian word meaning "the snake" and is used as both a common noun and a proper name in various contexts. In literature and folklore, the term is associated with serpents and often appears as a character name or descriptor for serpent-like beings.

In Norse mythology, the great sea serpent Jörmungandr is the best-known serpentine figure. In Norwegian retellings he is sometimes referred to simply as Ormen, and a related figure, Ormen Lange ("the Long Serpent"), features prominently in sagas and later folklore.

Ormen Lange is also the name of a major offshore natural gas field in the Norwegian North Sea. The field was discovered in the 1990s and developed by Statoil (now Equinor) with partners. Production began in the mid-2000s. Gas from Ormen Lange is transported to the United Kingdom via the Langeled pipeline, making it one of Norway's significant gas exporters.

The name Ormen remains in use in contemporary Norway for various purposes, including product or project names, and as a generic term in dialects and media. The exact usage depends on context, but the common thread is serpentine imagery or long, winding design.
