Lampposts, also known as lamp posts or street lights, are structures designed to hold a light fixture, typically for illuminating public spaces. They serve a crucial role in enhancing safety and visibility after dark, preventing accidents, and deterring crime. The design and material of lampposts vary widely depending on their intended application, historical context, and aesthetic considerations.

Common materials used in lamppost construction include cast iron, steel, aluminum, and sometimes wood or concrete for older or more decorative styles. The height of a lamppost can range from a few meters for pathways to over ten meters for major roadways, with the chosen height influencing the spread and intensity of light.

The light source within a lamppost has evolved significantly over time. Early lampposts used gas lighting, followed by incandescent bulbs. Modern lampposts predominantly utilize energy-efficient technologies such as high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and increasingly, light-emitting diodes (LEDs). LEDs are favored for their longevity, lower energy consumption, and ability to be precisely controlled for dimming or color tuning.

Beyond basic illumination, many lampposts are integrated with additional features. These can include signage, traffic cameras, Wi-Fi hotspots, electric vehicle charging points, and even small weather stations. The style of a lamppost can also be a significant element of urban design, with historical districts often preserving or replicating traditional lamp post designs to maintain a specific architectural character.
