Lakóta

The Lakóta (also spelled Lakota, Lakȟóta, or Teton Sioux) are a Native American people whose traditional territory spans the central and western regions of the present-day United States, particularly in the Great Plains. They are one of the three major groups of the Sioux (Dakota) people, the others being the Dakota and Nakota. The term *Lakóta* means "ally" or "friend" in their language, which is part of the Siouan language family.

Historically, the Lakóta were semi-nomadic, relying on buffalo hunting and seasonal movement across the plains. Their society was organized into seven major bands, including the Oglala, Miniconjou, Brulé, Sihasapa (Blackfeet), Itazipco (Sans Arc), Oohenunpa (Two Kettles), and Húŋkpapa (Thunderers). Each band had its own distinct culture and leadership but shared common linguistic and spiritual traditions.

The Lakóta played a significant role in the history of the American West, notably in conflicts such as the Red Cloud War (1866–1868) and the Battle of Little Bighorn (1876), where they defeated U.S. forces led by General George Custer. Following the decline of the buffalo herds and the forced relocation onto reservations, the Lakóta faced displacement and cultural suppression. Today, they are primarily associated with reservations in South Dakota, including the Pine Ridge, Rosebud, and Standing Rock reservations.

Lakóta culture is deeply rooted in traditional values such as respect for nature, communal living, and spiritual connection to the land. Their religious beliefs include the worship of *Wakȟáŋ Tȟáŋka* (Great Spirit) and the practice of the Ghost Dance, a revitalization movement that emerged in the late 19th century. The Lakóta have also contributed to modern literature, music, and activism, preserving their heritage through storytelling, art, and political advocacy.
