Laitteistokiihdytyksiä, often translated as hardware acceleration, refers to the use of specialized hardware components to perform certain tasks more efficiently than a general-purpose CPU. This offloading of computational work can significantly improve performance, reduce latency, and lower power consumption for specific applications.

Common examples of hardware acceleration include graphics processing units (GPUs) for rendering complex visual scenes in video games and professional software, and digital signal processors (DSPs) for audio and video processing. Network interface cards (NICs) often include hardware acceleration for tasks like packet filtering and TCP/IP offloading. More recently, dedicated AI accelerators, such as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and Neural Processing Units (NPUs), have emerged to speed up machine learning and artificial intelligence workloads.

The principle behind hardware acceleration is that by designing hardware specifically for a particular set of operations, it can execute those operations much faster and more efficiently than a CPU that is designed to handle a wide variety of tasks. This specialization allows for parallel processing of data and optimized instruction sets, leading to substantial performance gains. The implementation of hardware acceleration is crucial in modern computing for demanding applications and for optimizing the performance of devices ranging from smartphones to supercomputers.
