Laippapinta

Laippapinta is a Finnish term describing the sealing surface on a flange (laippa) used in piping and pressure equipment. This surface is the area that comes into contact with a gasket and a mating flange to form a leak-tight joint. The quality of the laippapinta—its flatness, smoothness, and contour—directly affects gasket seating and operating reliability.

The laippapinta is engineered to match the gasket type and the system’s pressure and temperature requirements. Common flange face configurations include flat face, raised face, tongue-and-groove, and ring-type joint. Each type determines how the gasket is compressed and how the joint seals. The choice depends on factors such as diameter, pressure class, and the nature of the fluid.

Manufacturing and inspection of the laippapinta follow established standards. The flange face is machined to specified flatness and perpendicularity relative to the bore, and its surface finish is defined by international standards (for example, EN 1092-1 for flanges and ASME B16.5 in many regions). Surface roughness and tolerances are specified to ensure reliable gasket seating and joint performance. Materials of the flange and the applied finish must resist corrosion and wear under operating conditions.

Applications of the laippapinta span industrial piping systems, including oil and gas, chemical processing, water treatment, and power generation.
