Lahustitel

Lahustitel is a Finnish term describing the ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent under defined conditions. It denotes the solubility or dissolvability of a material in a given solvent, typically expressed as the maximum concentration that can remain dissolved at a specific temperature. The property depends on solvent polarity, temperature, pH for ionizable compounds, and the presence of co-solvents or salts. For ionic substances, solubility is often linked to the solubility product and to pH-dependent curves; for nonionic compounds, solubility relates to hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions.

Solubility is usually reported as a concentration (for example g/L or mol/L) at a stated temperature. It is determined by equilibrium, with common methods including the shake-flask approach, and quantified using UV/Vis spectroscopy, HPLC, or calorimetry. Lahustitel is distinct from dissolution rate, which describes how fast dissolution occurs rather than the final amount dissolved.

In practice, lahustitel is crucial in pharmaceutical formulation, environmental chemistry, and materials science. Poor solubility can limit bioavailability; strategies to increase solubility include salt formation, co-solvents, surfactants, and solid-state modifications. Examples: sodium chloride is highly lahustitel in water; caffeine shows moderate solubility; ibuprofen is poorly soluble in water but soluble in some organic solvents.
