Lagrein

Lagrein is a red wine grape variety native to the province of South Tyrol (Alto Adige) in northern Italy. It is one of the region’s signature varieties and is grown throughout the valley and on hillside sites, with smaller plantings in neighboring areas such as Trentino.

Wine styles and characteristics: Lagrein typically produces deeply colored wines with firm tannins and good acidity, and it can age for many years. In cooler vintages the wines tend to be more restrained and aromatic, while warmer vintages yield fuller, fruit-driven wines. Common flavor notes include blackberry, black plum, and violet, with secondary hints of chocolate, coffee, licorice, and spice as they mature. There is also a rosé style known as Lagrein Rosato (Kretzer), produced by short skin contact and usually offering pale to bright pink color with crisp red-fruit flavors and lighter tannins.

Viticulture and winemaking: Lagrein ripens late and favors hillside vineyards with calcareous soils. It is primarily grown in Alto Adige, where it may be vinified as a varietal wine or blended with other local varieties. Winemaking ranges from stainless steel fermentation to oak aging; higher-end examples may see some barrel maturation to add structure and complexity.

Region and labeling: In addition to Alto Adige, small plantings occur in nearby regions, and the grape is often associated with local producers rather than broad international plantings. Notable producers in the region include Cantina Terlano and other Alto Adige wineries that showcase Lagrein in both dark, aging wines and in the lighter rosé style.
