Laenuprotsessi

Laenuprotsessi refers to a type of lignin degradation process, primarily observed in the pulp and paper industry, especially in the Kraft process. Lignin is a complex organic polymer found in wood and other plant materials, contributing to the rigidity and strength of these materials. In the context of paper production, lignin is a significant problem, as it can interfere with the efficient breakdown of cellulose and hemicellulose into pulp.

During the Kraft process, the wood chips are subjected to a mixture of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium sulfide (Na2S) to break down the lignin molecules. In some cases, an additional step is involved, referred to as the laenuprotsessi step. This step involves heat treatment, typically under pressure, to facilitate further lignin degradation, particularly in specific wood species exhibiting traits that hinder normal lignin extraction.

The purpose of laenuprotsessi is to enhance the efficiency of lignin removal and improve pulp yield, this is crucial for minimizing energy consumption, reducing chemical costs, and improving the overall quality of the final product.
