Laajennusmenetelmät, a Finnish term often translated as "extension methods" in programming, are a language feature that allows developers to add new methods to existing types without modifying their original source code. This is particularly useful for extending built-in types or types from external libraries that cannot be directly modified.

The concept of extension methods is present in several programming languages, most notably C#. In C#, an extension method is defined as a static method within a static class. The first parameter of the method specifies the type to be extended, preceded by the "this" keyword. When calling an extension method, it appears as if it were an instance method of the extended type, making the code more readable and intuitive.

For instance, one could create an extension method to add a "reverse" functionality to a string object without altering the String class itself. This promotes code reusability and modularity, allowing developers to organize utility functions in a clear and accessible manner. Extension methods are a powerful tool for enhancing the functionality of existing codebases, especially in object-oriented programming paradigms where immutability or unmodifiable types are common.
