Laajenemisnopeus refers to the rate at which the universe is expanding. This expansion is not about galaxies moving through space, but rather about space itself stretching and increasing the distances between objects. The concept is a cornerstone of modern cosmology, stemming from observations made by Edwin Hubble in the late 1920s. Hubble observed that galaxies are generally moving away from us, and the farther away a galaxy is, the faster it appears to be receding. This relationship is known as Hubble's Law.

The standard unit for measuring the expansion rate is the Hubble constant, denoted as H₀. It quantifies how much faster a galaxy appears to recede for each megaparsec (about 3.26 million light-years) of distance it is from us. Current measurements of the Hubble constant yield values around 70 kilometers per second per megaparsec, but there is ongoing debate and research regarding the precise value. This acceleration is attributed to a mysterious force known as dark energy, which is thought to make up a significant portion of the universe's total energy density.
