LPWANtekniker is a technician who specializes in the deployment, operation, and maintenance of Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) systems used for Internet of Things applications. The role covers networks based on technologies such as LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, and LTE-M, and may include Sigfox in some markets. LPWAN technicians work with public, private, and hybrid networks across utilities, manufacturing, agriculture, and smart city projects.

Typical tasks include conducting site surveys to determine optimal gateway placement, installing and configuring gateways and network servers, provisioning end devices with provisioning keys and credentials, and managing SIMs or credentials for licensed LPWAN connections. They perform commissioning, performance monitoring, fault diagnosis, and preventive maintenance. They handle firmware and software updates, tune device power settings for battery life, and ensure security practices such as key management and secure OTA updates. They also collaborate with integrators and operators to troubleshoot coverage, interference, and gateway backhaul issues.

Skills and tools: knowledge of RF fundamentals and wireless protocols, IP networking, and cloud or on-premises management platforms. Familiarity with LPWAN network servers (e.g., The Things Stack or similar), device provisioning workflows, and security best practices. Field tools include spectrum analyzers, RF meters, multimeters, gateways, antennas, and test devices, as well as laptop or tablet with management software for configuration and monitoring. Safety training and compliance with local electrical and RF safety regulations are important.

Education and career: typically vocational or technical education in electronics, telecommunications, or ICT, with hands-on LPWAN training. Certification may include vendor-specific trainings and industry certifications in LPWAN technologies and security. The role often serves as a stepping stone to network engineering, systems integration, or field engineering positions in IoT deployments.
