LCSTbased

LCSTbased is a term that refers to methods or systems that utilize the Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) behavior of certain polymers. LCST polymers are known to exhibit a phase transition in aqueous solutions. Below the LCST, the polymer is soluble in water, forming a homogeneous solution. As the temperature increases and crosses the LCST, the polymer becomes insoluble and precipitates out of the solution.

This temperature-dependent solubility can be exploited in various applications. For instance, LCST-based systems are employed in drug delivery. A drug can be encapsulated within a polymer matrix that is soluble at body temperature. Upon reaching a target site where the temperature is slightly higher than the LCST, the polymer precipitates, releasing the encapsulated drug. This offers a controlled and localized release mechanism.

Another area where LCST-based approaches are utilized is in bioseparation and purification. Proteins or other biomolecules can be attached to LCST polymers. By simply adjusting the temperature, the biomolecules can be selectively precipitated or kept in solution, facilitating their separation from complex mixtures. This method is advantageous due to its mild operating conditions, which are less likely to denature sensitive biomolecules. Furthermore, LCST-based materials are being explored for use in smart hydrogels, sensors, and tissue engineering scaffolds, all leveraging the responsive nature of these polymers to temperature changes.
