L-1B is a United States nonimmigrant visa category within the L-1 program. It is designed for intracompany transferees who possess specialized knowledge needed to perform functions in the U.S. operations of a multinational company. The visa enables a qualifying employer to transfer an employee from an affiliated foreign office to a U.S. office.

Eligibility requires three elements. First, the applicant must have worked for the sponsoring organization abroad for at least one continuous year within the three years immediately preceding the visa petition. Second, the U.S. employer must have a qualifying relationship with a foreign company, such as a parent company, branch, subsidiary, or affiliate. Third, the employee’s proposed U.S. position must require specialized knowledge—knowledge about the company’s products, services, research, equipment, techniques, or management know-how that is not readily available in the general market.

Duration and extensions are limited. L-1B status is generally granted for an initial period of up to three years, with the possibility of extensions to reach a total stay of up to five years. Extensions beyond five years are uncommon and depend on specific circumstances and regulatory guidance.

The application process involves the employer filing Form I-129 with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, along with supporting documentation. If the beneficiary is outside the United States, they typically apply for a visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate. If already in the United States, they may adjust status to L-1B if eligible. Large multinational companies may use an L-1 blanket petition to streamline processing for multiple employees.

L-1B holders may pursue permanent residence through employer-sponsored pathways such as I-140 petitions under other immigrant categories, leveraging the dual-intent nature of L-1 status. Policy and eligibility can evolve, and applicants should consult current official guidance.
