Lõpptugevus

Lõpptugevus is an Estonian term that translates to "breaking strength" or "ultimate strength" in English. It refers to the maximum stress a material can withstand before it begins to rupture or fail. This property is a crucial characteristic in material science and engineering, as it dictates the load-bearing capacity of components and structures.

When a material is subjected to tensile stress, it deforms. Initially, this deformation is elastic, meaning the material will return to its original shape once the stress is removed. As the stress increases, it reaches the elastic limit, beyond which permanent deformation occurs. The lõpptugevus is the point on the stress-strain curve where the material reaches its maximum resistance to this stretching force. Beyond this point, the material may continue to deform, but its ability to resist the applied load diminishes until it fractures.
