Lõpptihedust

Lõpptihedust is an Estonian term that translates roughly to “execution” or “capital punishment.” It is used to describe the act of legally or extralegally ending a person’s life, especially as a consequence of criminal proceedings. The word is composed of the root lõpp, meaning “end,” and the suffix tihedust, which is related to the verb tihe, meaning “to kill” or “to execute.” Etymologically the term draws on older Estonian expressions for death by state authority.

Historically, Estonian law has employed capital punishment for a variety of severe crimes, including treason, murder and certain financial offences. The last execution in Estonia occurred in 1941 during the Soviet occupation. After regaining independence in 1991, Estonia abolished the death penalty and ratified the Second Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits capital punishment. Today, lõpptihedust is a concept primarily used in historical or legal discussions rather than contemporary criminal practice.
