Lõdvestumiseks, also known as liquefaction, is a geological process where soil or sediment, which is saturated with water, loses strength and stiffness in response to an applied stress, typically an earthquake. This phenomenon is most commonly observed in areas with loose, water-saturated sands, particularly in coastal regions or near bodies of water.

The liquefaction process begins when the ground shakes during an earthquake. The shaking causes the water within the saturated soil to exert pressure on the soil particles, reducing the friction between them. As a result, the soil behaves like a liquid rather than a solid, leading to significant ground deformation. This can result in the ground cracking, settling, or even flowing, posing a significant risk to structures and infrastructure.
