These devices detect and measure temperature by exploiting various physical phenomena that change predictably with temperature variations. The choice of principle depends on the application's requirements for accuracy, range, response time, and cost.

One common principle involves electrical resistance. Resistive temperature detectors (RTDs) and thermistors change their electrical resistance as their temperature fluctuates. RTDs, often made of platinum, offer high accuracy and stability over a wide temperature range. Thermistors, typically made of semiconductor materials, exhibit a more significant resistance change for a given temperature variation, making them suitable for applications where sensitivity is crucial.

Another principle utilizes the thermoelectric effect. Thermocouples generate a voltage proportional to the temperature difference between two dissimilar metal junctions. They are widely used due to their robustness, wide temperature range, and relatively low cost, though their accuracy can be lower than RTDs.

Semiconductor-based sensors also operate on temperature-dependent electrical characteristics, such as the voltage drop across a PN junction. These are often integrated into electronic circuits for direct digital output and are common in consumer electronics and automotive applications. Infrared thermometers, on the other hand, measure the thermal radiation emitted by an object, allowing for non-contact temperature measurement based on the principle that hotter objects emit more infrared energy.
