Lämpönsäätelymekanismeja refers to the biological processes that living organisms use to maintain a stable internal body temperature, a state known as homeostasis. This is crucial for optimal enzyme function and overall survival, especially in environments with fluctuating temperatures.

In endotherms, such as mammals and birds, thermoregulation is largely internal. When body temperature rises, mechanisms like vasodilation (widening of blood vessels near the skin) increase heat loss to the environment, and sweating or panting releases heat through evaporation. Conversely, if the body temperature drops, vasoconstriction reduces heat loss, shivering generates heat through muscle activity, and metabolic rate may increase. The hypothalamus in the brain acts as the primary control center for these responses.

Ectotherms, like reptiles and amphibians, rely more on external sources of heat. Their body temperature fluctuates with the environment. To regulate, they may move to sunnier or shadier locations, burrow underground, or alter their behavior to conserve or dissipate heat. While they don't generate significant internal heat, they still possess mechanisms to manage their temperature within a viable range, often through behavioral adaptations.

Plants also employ thermoregulation strategies. Some plants can adjust their leaf orientation to minimize sun exposure during hot periods or maximize it during cooler times. Transpiration, the release of water vapor from leaves, also has a cooling effect. Certain flowers can generate heat, for instance, to volatilize scents and attract pollinators in cold weather. These mechanisms collectively ensure that biological processes can proceed efficiently across diverse species and environments.
