Lääkekehitys is the Finnish term for drug development. It encompasses the entire process of bringing a new pharmaceutical drug to market. This complex journey begins with fundamental research and discovery of potential therapeutic compounds, often through understanding disease mechanisms and identifying targets. Once a promising molecule is identified, it undergoes extensive preclinical testing in laboratory settings and animal models to assess its safety and efficacy.

Following successful preclinical studies, the drug candidate enters clinical trials in humans. These trials are divided into several phases, each with specific objectives. Phase I trials evaluate the drug's safety, dosage, and how it is metabolized in a small group of healthy volunteers. Phase II trials assess the drug's effectiveness and further evaluate safety in a larger group of patients with the targeted condition. Phase III trials are large-scale studies involving hundreds or thousands of patients to confirm efficacy, monitor side effects, compare it to standard treatments, and collect information that will allow the drug to be used safely.

If clinical trials demonstrate that the drug is safe and effective, the pharmaceutical company submits an application to regulatory authorities, such as the Finnish Medicines Agency (Fimea) or the European Medicines Agency (EMA), for marketing authorization. Upon approval, the drug can be manufactured and prescribed to patients. The process of lääkekehitys is lengthy, costly, and has a high failure rate, with only a small percentage of compounds that enter preclinical testing eventually making it to market. Post-market surveillance, known as Phase IV trials, continues to monitor the drug's safety and effectiveness in the general population after it has been approved.
