Küchenmeister, literally “master of the kitchen,” is a German occupational title for the senior official in charge of a kitchen in large households, royal or noble estates, monasteries, palaces, or grand hotels. The role was common from the Middle Ages into the early modern period and sometimes beyond, indicating authority over menu planning, food procurement, inventory management, recipe standardization, and the supervision of cooks and other kitchen staff. A Küchenmeister often advised the household steward or the ruler and was responsible for kitchen safety, portion control, ceremonial menus, and dietary requirements.
