This distance is a fundamental property that influences a molecule's structure, stability, and reactivity. Bond lengths are typically measured in picometers (pm) or angstroms (Å).

Several factors affect the length of a chemical bond. The size of the atoms involved is a primary determinant; larger atoms generally form longer bonds. The type of bond also plays a crucial role. Covalent bonds, which involve the sharing of electrons, vary in length depending on whether they are single, double, or triple bonds. Double bonds are shorter than single bonds between the same two atoms because the increased electron density between the nuclei pulls them closer together. Similarly, triple bonds are even shorter.
