Köldbutsningar, meaning cold outbreaks, are weather events in which very cold air from polar regions moves into mid-latitude areas. They are characterized by a rapid drop in temperatures, often accompanied by strong winds and, if moisture is present, snowfall or frost. The term is used in meteorology to describe episodes rather than a single weather feature.

Causes and mechanisms: Cold outbreaks arise from large-scale atmospheric patterns that allow Arctic air to advance southward. Key factors include a pronounced jet stream, high-pressure ridges to the north that trap cold air, or blocking patterns that steer cold air into lower latitudes. In some cases, disturbances of the polar vortex or sudden stratospheric warming can spill cold air downward, triggering outbreaks several days later. The exact onset and duration depend on how air masses interact with local terrain and evolving weather patterns.

Duration and variability: Outbreaks can be brief, lasting a day or two, or extend over longer periods with several days of persistent cold. They may follow a sharp cold front and bring strong winds, or occur with more moderate cooling that persists for multiple nights. The severity is influenced by cloud cover, wind chill, humidity, and precipitation, which can lead to frost, ice, or snow events.

Impacts: Cold outbreaks increase energy demand, affect transportation and infrastructure, and raise health risks for vulnerable populations. Agriculture may experience frost damage, and planning for heat and power supply becomes important during such events.

Forecasting and monitoring: National meteorological services use numerical weather prediction models and ensemble forecasts to predict timing, magnitude, and duration, issuing warnings and guidance to the public.
