Käyttösessionit, often translated as "user sessions" or "usage sessions" in English, refer to a period of time during which a user interacts with a digital system, such as a website, application, or software. A session begins when a user initiates contact with the system and typically ends after a period of inactivity, when the user explicitly logs out, or when the system closes.

The concept of a session is crucial for managing user state and providing a personalized experience. When a user starts a session, the system usually creates a unique identifier for that session, often stored in a cookie or passed through URLs. This identifier allows the system to recognize subsequent requests from the same user and maintain context. For instance, it enables shopping carts to persist, login status to be remembered across different pages, and user preferences to be applied.

Tracking usage sessions is a common practice in web analytics and application monitoring.
