Käsityösaippuanvalmistus, also known as artisanal soap making, is the process of creating soap in small batches using traditional methods and often higher quality ingredients than commercially produced soaps. This practice emphasizes craftsmanship, creativity, and often a more natural approach to personal care products.

The most common method for making handmade soap is cold process soap making. This involves combining oils and fats with a lye solution (sodium hydroxide for bar soap, potassium hydroxide for liquid soap). The mixture undergoes saponification, a chemical reaction where the lye transforms the oils into soap and glycerin. This process requires careful measurement of ingredients and precise temperature control. The soap is then poured into molds and left to cure for several weeks, during which time it hardens and excess water evaporates, resulting in a milder bar.

Hot process soap making is another method where the saponification process is accelerated by applying heat, typically in a slow cooker or double boiler. This results in a usable soap much faster than cold process, but the texture and appearance can be more rustic.

Artisanal soap makers often incorporate natural additives such as essential oils for fragrance, botanicals like herbs and flowers for visual appeal and potential skin benefits, and natural colorants like clays and spices. The focus is on creating unique, aesthetically pleasing, and often skin-friendly products. Unlike many commercial soaps that may have glycerin removed, handmade soaps retain this natural humectant, contributing to their moisturizing properties.
