Käkfrakturer

Käkfrakturer, also known as mandibular fractures, are breaks in the lower jawbone. They are common facial injuries, often resulting from trauma such as assaults, falls, or motor vehicle accidents. Sports injuries can also lead tokäkfrakturer. Symptoms typically include pain, swelling, difficulty opening or closing the mouth, and a misalignment of the teeth. Bleeding in the mouth and bruising are also possible.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination and imaging studies, such as X-rays or CT scans. Treatment depends on the severity and location of the fracture. Minor fractures may be managed with pain medication and a soft diet, allowing the bone to heal naturally. More complex or displaced fractures often require surgical intervention. This can involve wiring the jaw shut to immobilize it, or using plates and screws to stabilize the broken bone fragments.

Complications of untreated or improperly treatedkäkfrakturer can include infection, malunion (healing in an incorrect position), nonunion (failure to heal), and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. In some cases, nerve damage can occur, leading to numbness or altered sensation in the lip or chin. Rehabilitation after treatment may involve physical therapy to regain full jaw function and range of motion. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial for optimal healing and recovery.
