Kzintis

The Kzinti are a fictional alien species appearing in Larry Niven's Known Space universe. They are a sentient, mammalian species resembling large, bipedal cats. Physically, they are described as having fur, retractable claws, four-fingered hands, and a tail. Kzinti possess a heightened sense of smell and are known for their strength and agility.

Historically, the Kzinti were a warlike and expansionist race. Their civilization developed on a planet with a short stellar lifespan, leading to a desperate need for rapid technological advancement and colonization. For a period, they were a significant threat to other species in Known Space, engaging in numerous conflicts. Their military prowess was considerable, with a focus on boarding actions and close-quarters combat.

A pivotal event in Kzinti history was their encounter with humans, particularly their defeat during the early stages of human interstellar expansion. This loss, often referred to as the Kzinti Wars, significantly curbed their ambitions and led to a period of introspection and a gradual shift away from aggressive expansionism.
