Kylmäkestävyys refers to the ability of an organism, such as a plant or animal, to survive and function in cold temperatures. This trait is crucial for species inhabiting regions with harsh winters or persistent cold climates. Organisms exhibit various strategies to cope with cold, which can be broadly categorized into tolerance and avoidance.

Cold tolerance involves physiological and biochemical adaptations that allow cells and tissues to withstand freezing or extreme cold. Plants, for example, can accumulate cryoprotectants like sugars and proteins in their cells, which prevent ice crystal formation and damage. They may also alter cell membrane composition to maintain fluidity at low temperatures. Animals might develop specialized antifreeze proteins that bind to ice crystals, preventing their growth and thereby reducing cellular damage.

Cold avoidance mechanisms aim to minimize exposure to cold. Animals may migrate to warmer regions during cold seasons, or they might enter states of dormancy such as hibernation or torpor, where metabolic rates are significantly reduced to conserve energy. Plants can achieve avoidance through shedding leaves before winter, protecting sensitive tissues, or by having seeds or spores that can endure cold temperatures until favorable conditions return.
