Kylbaserade is a Swedish term used to describe systems or processes that rely primarily on cooling to function. In engineering and technology, the adjective is used to classify equipment, architectures, or strategies whose performance depends on maintaining or achieving low temperatures. A kylbaserad approach contrasts with heat-based or purely passive methods, emphasizing active removal of heat from components or environments.

Typical applications include data centers and high-performance computing, where liquid cooling or immersion cooling keeps servers within safe operating temperatures; consumer electronics and telecommunications equipment; automotive and aerospace thermal management; and industrial processes such as chemical production or food preservation where temperature control is essential. In practice, kylbaserade systems often employ refrigerants or coolants circulated by pumps through heat exchangers, with components such as chillers, cooling towers, radiators, and fans. More recent implementations include immersion cooling, where electronic components are submerged in dielectric liquids, and other closed-loop cooling circuits.

Advantages include improved reliability and performance, longer component lifespans, and the possibility of denser, more energy-efficient designs. Challenges involve energy consumption, refrigerant global warming potential, maintenance requirements, and potential environmental impacts.
