The genre blends humor, competition, and collaboration, often framed around ongoing group dynamics rather than a single presenter or game.

Kvariety developed from late 1990s to early 2000s network programming and became a defining feature of Korean broadcast entertainment. It gained domestic popularity through long-running programs that mix studio segments with field missions, and it achieved international recognition as several series were exported, subtitled, or remade.

Typical kvariety formats involve a mix of mission-based tasks, cutaway segments, and in-studio talk or banter. Casts are often composed of comedians, actors, and variety veterans who build ongoing relationships and inside jokes across episodes. Guests may participate for a single episode or multiple arcs. The genre frequently emphasizes teamwork, personal dynamics, and situational humor rather than polished competition.
