The term, which derives from Scandinavian languages using kvantitet for quantity, is used in some regional literature to distinguish quantity-focused tracers from those that primarily monitor concentration profiles.

In practice, kvantitetstracers are used to estimate mass flux, injection volumes, or overall sweep and breakthrough behavior in systems such as groundwater flow, surface water hydrology, and reservoir engineering.
