Massestimate is the set of methods used to determine the mass of astronomical objects or systems when direct mass measurements are not possible. Because mass itself is not directly observable in many contexts, scientists infer it from observable quantities such as motions, gravitational effects, light emission, and spectral properties. Mass estimates are central to studies of galaxies, clusters, stars, and exoplanets, and they underpin inferences about dark matter, stellar evolution, and cosmology.

Dynamical methods form a major class of mass estimates. For bound systems like galaxies and clusters, the motions of tracers such as stars, gas, or member galaxies reflect the underlying gravitational potential. The virial theorem provides a relation between mass, a characteristic size, and a velocity dispersion, often written roughly as M ~ k R sigma^2 / G, where R is a radius, sigma a velocity dispersion, and G the gravitational constant. Rotation curves in disk galaxies yield the cumulative mass within a given radius. In clusters, masses derive from the dynamics of galaxies or from hot X-ray–emitting gas under hydrostatic equilibrium.

Gravitational lensing offers a powerful, geometry-based mass probe that does not rely on dynamical states. The deflection of background light by foreground mass yields projected mass distributions, applicable to galaxies, clusters, and large-scale structure.

Other approaches include stellar population synthesis to estimate stellar mass from luminosity and color-based mass-to-light ratios; asteroseismology and binary dynamics for stellar masses; and planet-related methods such as radial velocity, transit timing, astrometry, and microlensing for exoplanet masses.

Uncertainties arise from model choices, distance errors, anisotropies, and assumptions about equilibrium or initial mass functions, making cross-validation with multiple methods valuable.
