The goal is to determine whether the benefits outweigh the costs, thus justifying the undertaking. The core principle of a cost-benefit analysis involves quantifying all costs and benefits associated with an action in monetary terms. Costs typically include direct expenses, such as labor and materials, as well as indirect costs like environmental impact or social disruption. Benefits encompass direct gains, such as increased revenue or improved efficiency, and intangible advantages, like enhanced public safety or improved quality of life.

Despite its usefulness, CBA has limitations. Quantifying intangible benefits and costs can be challenging, leading to potential biases or omissions. Furthermore, assumptions about future costs and benefits can be uncertain, impacting the reliability of the analysis. Nevertheless, CBA remains a valuable tool for informed decision-making, providing a structured framework for assessing the economic efficiency of various undertakings.
