Kuruba

Kuruba is a subcaste of the Kurmi community, primarily found in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. They are considered a part of the backward classes in India and have a significant presence in the rural areas of these states.

Traditionally, the Kuruba people were agricultural laborers and worked on the farms of the Zamindars, who were the local landlords. They were also known to work as shepherds, tending to the sheep and goats of the local communities. The women of the community were skilled in handloom weaving and were known for their skills in spinning and dyeing cotton yarns.

The Kuruba people follow a traditional way of life, with an emphasis on agriculture and animal husbandry. They are predominantly Gowda Brahmin followers and observe the traditional rituals and festivals of their community. The Kuruba society is structured around a system of joint family units, with family members living together in a shared household.

In recent years, the Kuruba community has made significant strides in education and economic development. Many members of the community have pursued higher education and have secured government jobs or established their own businesses. However, the community still faces challenges related to poverty, access to education, and social mobility.

The Kuruba people have a distinct cultural identity, with a rich tradition of music, dance, and folk arts. They are known for their expertise in traditional crafts, such as woodcarving and metalwork. The community has a strong sense of pride and solidarity, and efforts are being made to document and preserve their history, culture, and traditions.
