Kumipeite

Kumipeite is a term used in Finnish industrial practice to refer to a rubber coating or elastomeric protective layer applied to a variety of substrates. The word kumi means rubber and peite means coating or covering, and in everyday Finnish usage kumipeite describes coatings that provide insulation, abrasion resistance, and moisture barriers. In English-language references the term is not a standard mineral or material name, and mentions of kumipeite typically appear in company technical documentation, procurement catalogs, or regional standards rather than in international handbooks.

Composition and properties: Kumipeite coatings are usually based on natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), EPDM, or other elastomers. They are often formulated with fillers such as carbon black or silica to improve wear resistance, and with additives for aging resistance, UV stability, and sometimes flame retardancy. The coatings are designed to be flexible and elastic, with good adhesion to metals, polymers, or textiles. They commonly offer water and oil resistance and have dielectric properties suitable for insulation in electrical or automotive contexts. Typical thicknesses range from about 0.1 mm to several millimeters, depending on function.

Manufacturing and applications: The coating can be applied by dipping, brushing, spraying, or extrusion coating, followed by curing or vulcanization as required by the formulation. Substrates include metal surfaces, plastic parts, cables, hoses, and textile components.
