Kulturskikt

Kulturskikt, a term originating from Scandinavian sociology, refers to the cultural stratification within a society, where individuals or groups are categorized based on their cultural capital, tastes, and practices. This concept is often used to analyze and understand the social divisions and inequalities that exist beyond economic class.

The idea of kulturskikt is rooted in the works of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, who introduced the concept of cultural capital. Bourdieu argued that cultural capital, which includes educational qualifications, intellectual skills, and cultural knowledge, plays a significant role in maintaining and reproducing social inequalities. Kulturskikt extends this idea by examining how cultural preferences and practices can serve as markers of social status and distinction.

In Scandinavian societies, kulturskikt has been used to study the cultural divisions between different social groups. Despite these criticisms, the concept of kulturskikt remains a valuable tool for understanding the cultural dimensions of social inequality.
