Kujaku

Kujaku is the Japanese word for the peacock, the bird known for its iridescent tail. The kanji孔雀 denote this species, and the term appears in various aspects of Japanese culture, from natural history to art and design.

In Japanese Buddhism, Kujaku Myōō (孔雀明王), or Peacock Bright King, is a Wisdom King (myōō) in Shingon and Tendai traditions. He is associated with the transformation of negative emotions into wisdom and insight and is usually depicted with a peacock or peacock feathers. He is invoked for protection, focus, and the dispelling of obstacles, and he often appears in mandalas and temple iconography.

Cultural symbolism: The peacock motif is common in Japanese textiles, lacquerware, ceramics, and architectural ornament, representing beauty, pride, and spiritual awakening. The bird’s ability to eat poisonous plants without harm is sometimes cited in Buddhist narratives as a metaphor for transforming suffering into enlightenment.

In contemporary usage, Kujaku may appear in literature, film, or games as a name or motif referencing the bird. It can also be a personal or place name in Japan, though such uses are relatively uncommon.
