KryzeSatines

KryzeSatines is a contemporary multimedia artistic collective that was founded in 2017 in Berlin. The group specializes in integrating cryogenic preservation techniques with the use of satin textiles, creating installations that explore the intersection of light, temperature, and texture. The collective’s name merges the Greek word “kryo,” meaning cold, with the luxurious fabric “satine,” reflecting its artistic focus.

The founders, artist collective members Lena Müller and visual technologist Tobias Fischer, met at the Berlin Design Forum while researching the preservation of organic materials. They were inspired by the calming qualities of satin and the potential of cryogenic technology to alter the visual properties of fabric. By experimenting with chilled satin garments under controlled conditions, they developed a unique visual language that plays with translucence and the reflective properties of the material.

KryzeSatines has produced several notable public installations, including the 2019 exhibition “Frozen Threads” at the Zeche Zollverein museum and the 2021 project “CryoElegance” commissioned by the Mercedes-Benz Museum. The collective also collaborated with the fashion house Rei Rom. Their work is featured in the Museum of Modern Art’s temporary exhibition on “Materials in Motion” and in the online platform Artsy’s “Cold Comfort” series.

The collective’s work has been reviewed in publications such as Artforum, Vogue, and The New York Times. Critics have highlighted its innovative use of temperature to manipulate visual perception and its commentary on climate and preservation. Academics in textile research have cited KryzeSatines’ techniques in studies on cryogenic treatments of natural fibers.

Today, KryzeSatines continues to operate out of Berlin, while also hosting workshops and presenting at international art biennials. They maintain an active social media presence and publish a quarterly newsletter that documents their experiments and collaborations.
