Kropstemperatur

Kropstemperatur, or body temperature, is a measure of the body's warmth and reflects the balance between heat produced by metabolism and heat lost to the environment. Core temperature is regulated by the hypothalamus and varies with activity, time of day, and surrounding conditions.

Normal values depend on where temperature is measured and individual factors. In healthy adults, typical oral temperature is about 36.5–37.5°C (97.7–99.5°F). Rectal or esophageal measurements tend to be slightly higher than oral readings, while axillary (armpit) readings are usually lower. Tympanic (ear) measurements approximate core temperature but can be affected by technique and ear conditions. Because of these differences, temperature readings should be interpreted in context and, if possible, compared with the person’s usual values.

Fever is a common clinical sign defined roughly as a body temperature above 38°C (100.4°F), usually indicating infection or inflammation, though other conditions can cause fever. Hypothermia, a dangerous drop in temperature, is typically defined as below 35°C (95°F). Temperature is influenced by circadian rhythms, age, pregnancy, physical activity, medications, and environmental temperature. Measurement methods and timing (time of day, recent meals, or activities) can affect readings.

In clinical use, body temperature supports assessment of health status, infection, and response to treatment. A single reading rarely provides a complete picture; repeated measurements and clinical context are important for accurate interpretation.
