Kropsdysmorf

Kropsdysmorf, often referred to as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in English-speaking contexts, is a mental health condition characterized by an obsessive preoccupation with perceived flaws in one's appearance. These perceived flaws are often minor or nonexistent to others. Individuals with kropsdysmorf spend a significant amount of time each day thinking about these perceived defects, which can cause intense emotional distress and interfere with daily functioning.

The preoccupation can focus on any part of the body, but common areas include the skin, hair, face, or specific body parts like the nose or eyes. This can manifest as concerns about perceived ugliness, asymmetry, or the size or shape of a particular feature. The distress associated with these perceived flaws leads to repetitive behaviors, such as excessive grooming, mirror checking, reassurance seeking, or comparing oneself to others. In some cases, individuals may engage in cosmetic procedures or social withdrawal to hide or correct the perceived defect.

Kropsdysmorf can significantly impact a person's quality of life, leading to social isolation, depression, anxiety, and even suicidal ideation. It is important to note that kropsdysmorf is not simply vanity or a desire to improve one's appearance; it is a complex mental health condition that requires professional assessment and treatment. Therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and sometimes medication can be effective in managing the symptoms of kropsdysmorf.
