Kroppsfettandel, also known as body fat percentage, is a measure of the proportion of a person's total weight that is composed of fat. It is distinct from body mass index (BMI), which only considers height and weight. Body fat percentage is generally considered a more accurate indicator of a person's health status, as it differentiates between lean body mass (muscles, bones, organs) and fat mass.

High body fat percentage is associated with an increased risk of various health problems, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and joint issues. Conversely, a very low body fat percentage can also be detrimental, potentially leading to hormonal imbalances, weakened immune function, and nutrient deficiencies.

There are several methods for measuring body fat percentage, ranging in accuracy and accessibility. Common methods include bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), skinfold calipers, and DEXA scans. BIA devices, often found in home scales, send a small electrical current through the body to estimate fat mass. Skinfold calipers involve pinching and measuring the thickness of subcutaneous fat at specific sites on the body. DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scans are considered a more precise method, using X-rays to differentiate between bone, lean mass, and fat mass.

Recommended body fat percentages vary based on age, sex, and fitness level. Generally, women tend to have a higher essential body fat percentage than men due to reproductive needs. Maintaining a healthy body fat percentage is a key component of overall health and well-being.
