Kronisme

Kronisme is a term used in contemporary discourse to describe a particular approach to time in social thought. The word is formed from the root chron- meaning time, plus the suffix -isme indicating a system of ideas or practices. In general use, kronisme denotes a tendency to foreground temporal questions in analysis of culture, politics, or history.

Scholarly uses of kronisme differ. Some writers define kronisme as temporal essentialism, the belief that social identities and institutions are predominantly shaped by fixed historical periods. Others describe kronisme as chronotopic thinking, in which narratives and policies are organized around particular time horizons (short-term cycles, mid-term reforms, long-run trajectories). A third sense treats kronisme as a policy stance that privileges long-run timeframes in decision making, sometimes at the expense of present concerns.

Origin and reception: The term appears in recent critical and cultural theory, often as a label for debates over the role of time in modern life. Critics argue that kronisme can produce determinism, homogenize diversity of timelines, or overlook non-temporal factors.

Examples: In political rhetoric, kronisme may manifest as emphasis on historic cycles driving current events. In historiography, kronisme could shape how periods are defined and compared.
