Krn

Krn is a mountain massif in the western Julian Alps, located on the border between Slovenia and Italy. It centers on the peak commonly referred to as Krn and forms the core of the Krn Mountains. The range lies near the Soča Valley, with access from Slovenian towns such as Bovec and from Italian towns such as Tarvisio.

Geologically, the Krn range is primarily composed of limestone and dolomite, shaped by glaciation into rugged ridges, steep walls and high-altitude valleys. The area features karst landscapes, scree fields and alpine meadows above the tree line.

Historically, the Krn region was part of the Isonzo Front during World War I, and several trenches and fortifications remain in the terrain as reminders of that era.

Recreationally, Krn is popular for hiking, mountaineering and ski touring. From Bovec or Tarvisio, visitors can access a network of trails ranging from moderate day hikes to technical routes for climbers; winter conditions make it suitable for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing.

Ecologically, the high-altitude habitats support alpine flora and fauna, including species such as edelweiss and chamois. The area also hosts a variety of bird life and plant communities characteristic of the Julian Alps.
