Kriens

Kriens is a municipality in the canton of Lucerne, Switzerland. It belongs to the district of Lucerne-Land and is situated on the western shore of Lake Lucerne, immediately west of the city of Lucerne. The town comprises several quarters and hillside areas, with a mix of residential neighborhoods, commercial zones, and agricultural land. It serves as a gateway to the surrounding mountains and lake region.

Evidence of settlement in the area dates to the medieval period. Over the 19th and 20th centuries, Kriens developed from a rural community into a suburban town with industry and services, while maintaining green spaces. The growth continued with expanded housing, infrastructure, and public amenities.

The Fräkmüntegg area on the Pilatus massif and the base station of the Pilatus cable car lie within or near Kriens, making it a popular starting point for visitors. The town also includes parks, river valleys, and viewpoints that overlook Lake Lucerne and the surrounding peaks.

Kriens is well integrated into the Lucerne public transport network. It is linked with Lucerne by frequent bus and tram services and by the Kriens–Fräkmüntegg cable car, which provides access to the Pilatus mountain and its attractions. The local economy centers on services, retail, and small- to medium-sized enterprises. Educational facilities include primary and secondary schools, and cultural life is supported by community centers and events.
