Kreuzgestreift

Kreuzgestreift is a term used in German textile terminology to describe a fabric pattern in which stripes run in two or more directions and intersect to form a cross-hatched or lattice motif. The pattern derives from the combination of perpendicular stripe directions and can produce grids, diamonds, or checks depending on stripe width, color contrast, and the underlying weave or print method.

In production, Kreuzgestreift can be created by weaving stripes in different directions on the loom so that warp and weft stripes cross, or by printing or dyeing two perpendicular stripe sets on a base fabric. The result ranges from restrained tonal effects to bold, high-contrast patterns suitable for clothing, upholstery, or decorative textiles.

Historically, the term appears in German-speaking catalogs and archives to classify fabrics used in fashion and interior decoration, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries. While not as widely used in modern fashion as simpler stripe or tartan categories, Kreuzgestreift remains a recognized descriptor in textile scholarship and museum collections.
