Kosteudensäätimiä, often translated as humidity controllers or humidistats, are devices designed to monitor and regulate the moisture level in an environment. They are crucial components in various systems aimed at maintaining a specific relative humidity for optimal comfort, preservation of materials, or industrial processes. These devices typically consist of a sensor that measures the ambient humidity and a mechanism that activates or deactivates a connected appliance.

The sensing element can vary. Some humidistats utilize hygroscopic materials like hair or synthetic fibers that change length or shape with varying humidity. Others employ electronic sensors based on capacitive or resistive principles, where electrical properties change in response to moisture. When the measured humidity deviates from a predetermined setpoint, the humidistat sends a signal to a humidifier, dehumidifier, ventilation system, or air conditioner. For instance, if the humidity drops below the set point, a humidistat might trigger a humidifier to turn on. Conversely, if the humidity rises too high, it could activate a dehumidifier or increase ventilation.
