Kostenabschätzung, also known as cost estimation, is the process of approximating the monetary cost required to complete a project, manufacture a product, or deliver a service. It involves identifying all anticipated expenses, from labor and materials to overhead and contingency. The goal is to provide a realistic financial forecast that aids in decision-making, budgeting, and resource allocation.

Several methods exist for conducting cost estimations, ranging in complexity and accuracy. Analogous estimation uses historical data from similar past projects. Parametric estimation employs statistical relationships between historical data and other variables, such as cost per square foot. Bottom-up estimation involves breaking down a project into smaller components and estimating the cost of each component individually, then aggregating these estimates. Three-point estimation considers optimistic, pessimistic, and most likely scenarios to derive a weighted average cost.

The accuracy of a cost estimation is influenced by factors such as the availability and reliability of data, the expertise of the estimator, the complexity of the project, and the time available for the estimation. Initial estimates are often rough and become more refined as more project details become known. Effective cost estimation is crucial for project success, enabling stakeholders to assess feasibility, secure funding, and manage financial risks throughout the project lifecycle. It forms a foundational element of project management and financial planning.
