Kosketusnäyttötekniikat refer to the various methods used to detect and interpret a user's touch on a display screen. These technologies allow direct interaction with digital information by simply touching the screen with a finger or a stylus. The most common types of touchscreens are capacitive and resistive.

Capacitive touchscreens are widely used in modern smartphones and tablets. They work by detecting the electrical charge of a conductive object, such as a human finger. When a finger touches the screen, it disrupts the electrostatic field, and the location of this disruption is calculated by the controller. This technology offers excellent clarity, responsiveness, and multi-touch capabilities, allowing for gestures like pinching and zooming. There are two main types of capacitive screens: surface capacitive and projected capacitive. Projected capacitive is more advanced and precise.

Resistive touchscreens are an older but still relevant technology, often found in point-of-sale systems, industrial equipment, and some GPS devices. They consist of multiple layers of flexible material, with a conductive coating on each. When pressure is applied to the screen, these layers touch, completing a circuit. The controller then determines the location of the touch based on the resistance change. Resistive screens are durable and can be operated with any object, including gloves or a stylus, but they generally offer lower clarity and are less responsive than capacitive screens, typically not supporting true multi-touch.

Other, less common touch technologies include infrared touchscreens, which use a grid of infrared beams, and surface acoustic wave (SAW) touchscreens, which use ultrasonic waves. Each technology has its own advantages and disadvantages regarding cost, durability, accuracy, and environmental resistance, influencing their suitability for different applications.
