Kosketuskäyttöliittymiä, or touch interfaces, refer to graphical user interfaces that are operated by touch. Instead of using a mouse or keyboard, users interact with the interface by directly touching the screen with their fingers or a stylus. This technology has become ubiquitous in modern electronic devices, from smartphones and tablets to interactive kiosks and even some computers.

The fundamental principle of a touch interface involves sensing the location and sometimes the pressure of a touch on a display. Various technologies enable this, including resistive touchscreens, which detect touch by two conductive layers pressing against each other, and capacitive touchscreens, which sense the change in electrical capacitance caused by a conductive object, like a finger, touching the screen. Capacitive screens are more common in modern consumer electronics due to their superior sensitivity and multi-touch capabilities, allowing for gestures like pinching to zoom.

Touch interfaces offer several advantages. They are intuitive and easy to learn, making devices accessible to a wide range of users. Direct manipulation of on-screen elements can feel more engaging and natural than indirect input methods. Furthermore, touch interfaces can simplify device design by reducing the need for physical buttons and external input peripherals. However, challenges can include screen smudging, the potential for inaccurate input, and the need for careful design to avoid accidental activation. The evolution of touch interface technology continues to enhance precision, responsiveness, and introduce new interaction methods.
